Selected Reading Material: School Life - School Camps (Outdoor Adventure)
Most of us have been to camps some time or another. Some of us had great experiences while some of us ... well, just did not manage to have a smashing good time. Let's listen to what these two children have to say about their experience. Meiling seemed to have had a great time. |

Daren was not so fortunate.
What did he think about his camping trip? When pupils need to write about camping experiences they can approach the question from these two angles - The 'awesome' one & the 'awful' one. Remember, the plot is up to you! Even if you had a great experience, but feel that a horrid one seems more interesting to write about, go ahead and write it! However, do not get so overwhelmed with the drama that you overlook the question! |
Part 1
From the above dialogues, we can summarize the experiences as follows:

Is this sufficient to build up content in your composition? Definitely. However, it wouldn't hurt to gather more information and experiences, right?
Part 2
The following are really incredibly detailed insights into outdoor adventure camps shared by students from all across the island. Just like Meiling and Darren, many pupils feel differently about their experiences.

Now that we have the possible content and the different opinions about camping, we can focus on a sample question and look into vocabulary we can use.
Remember that the above content are recounts, memories of what happened at a camp. When writing an actual composition about a camp, you can add more dramatic moments to spice up the story! Part 3
Let us explore some possible scenarios which can add more zest to the composition. Look at the following images. Suggest possible situations which might occur during the camp that can be related to these images? |

Although the current trend in writing does allow some space for creativity, I still strongly advise pupils not to go overboard with their ideas. When the plot gets too unrealistic and complex, especially under examination conditions, you can very easily write out of point! E.g. alien abduction, magical powers (wizards) or supernatural beings (vampires or zombies etc) are part and parcel of popular culture and are entertaining on television, movies and in books. However, such themes are far-fetched and are best avoided in an examination setting!
With so much camp-related content and additional ideas available, we should be able to attempt a sample question confidently.
